Golthar’s Last Gasp

Maruc turned to Ludo. “I’ve got to check over Stephan then Feldard.” He stared meaningfully at both injured warriors with a look at brooked no argument. “I suspect our floating mage ran out of buoyancy. My advice would be to ensure he doesn’t relearn it. I also suspect Stephan here would like to discuss in depth his part in the destruction of Pyotr’s Homestead. Equally, we need to know to what he believes the tapestry leads to and more importantly, his involvement in the Sons of Night.”

The dwarf grumbled as half the party darted off into the woods searching for the downed Golthar. He’d best go after them in case the mage still had some trick up his sleeve. He gave a nod to priest. “We’ll be back. See to Stephan and yourself first.” Feldard started off after the others into the woods.

Stephan sat heavily on a fallen log and prayed along with Maruc. His sided ached and he had a searing gash in his shoulder.

Ludo finished trussing up Jolenta and then picking up his sword ran off into the undergrowth looking for the fallen mage. Miklos counted down the seconds and felt the numbing constriction leave his arms and legs. He sprang to his feet and swung his gaze over the field of battle. Someone had been quiet efficient in dispatching the webbed and unconscious foe. He guessed it was Feldard’s work. He was notorious for his lack of compassion as far a non-dwarves were concerned.

Satisfied that the party were not going to be surprised by a resurgent force, he hopped after the rogue. He was about to deal with a mage after all, and there is nothing worse than a mage with no sense of humour.

Hasan grimaced, then smiled. “Stricken no more,” he laughed. The elf followed Miklos as fast as his still-awkward gait would allow.

After some searching they eventually found him lying prostrate on the ground, his body a mess of cuts and by the look of things both legs were broken. Ludo could see he was still alive…just. He advanced towards the wizard, his fear gone; now that he could see that Golthar was helpless and near death.

Golthar sputtered, “What have I ever done to you boy?”

Ludo riffled through Golthar’s belongings, looking for anything of value. He spoke to Golthar “I believe that our mage who is good and just will be able to use your spellbook far better than you, you wretch, you have caused so much pain and suffering. Thankfully your evil ends here. You can die knowing that your plans have come to nought.”

There was no spellbook to be found. Golthar smiled, his secrets would not be so easily found. He gathered his strength to make one last statement. “You meddle with forces you do not understand, boy. You fools may find Hutaaka, but it only bring you deathhhhh…” hH hissed as his last breathe left him.

Ludo searched Golthar’s body. He wore a jade ring that looked quite valuable, and also concealed on his person was a pouch filled with gemstones.

The dwarf was slower at moving though; every muscle and nerve ending in his body still ached from the magic bolts Golthar had cast at him. There was little physical damage he could see but he certainly felt like hell.

Feldard found Ludo and Miklos standing around an already dead Golthar. “Did he have much to say before passing on?”

When the others came back from the downed Golthar, Stephan asked “Was my arrow stuck in his evil hide? I’d like it back.” He staggered to his feet, then went to retrieve the arrow himself.

  2. Ludo

Ludo tosses the bag of gem stones to Miklos and tries on the jade ring to see if it fits. “Well there will be no more running from this evil tyrant, the terror he bought to so many is finished. Just before he attacked us I found his lair in Threshold, I suggest we go back under cover of darkness and finish clearing ot out. Seeing all the party members gathered around Golthars dead body, Ludo asked “who is guarding Jolenta”?

  3. Hasan

“Threshold again?” questioned Hasan. “Let that rat’s nest fall apart on its own. We are off to, Hutaka, did he say? That name means nothing to me.”

  4. Feldard

“The priest is watching her,” Feldard answered Ludo and nodded over towards Maruc who was frowning in his direction. No doubt the priest had plans to heal him, even though the priest looked in just as bad a state. It was times like this that Feldard almost wished he could return the favour – but he had no such blessings and definately no magic. The most that he could do was put off the inevitable, hoping it would give the priest time to recover a little himself. Feldard turned away from the priests piercing gaze and looked to Hasan.
“Hutaka? What’s with this Hutaka?” the dwarf questioned, having missed the dying Golthars last words.

  5. Maruc

Maruc finished dressing Stephan’s wounds. He nodded over to Jolenta “Lets go and see what she has to say for herself.”

Maruc lent over her trussed body and removed her holy symbol and kicked away her weapon and shield. He glanced and the Symbol*

*DM does Maruc recognise the deity?

“I know you are Jolenta, Priestess of (*?).You are in the employ of Golthar the wizard. We first saw you trailing us in Rifllian in the company of Golthar. You will tell us what Golthar hoped to gain from the secrets hidden in the mountains. Also what you you know of the Sons of Night?”

  6. Maruc

Miklos lent over Ludo. “Hutaaka eh? Hmm. Perhaps he meant the jackal headed statues we have be bumping into in these parts. He seems to have thought them of some value? He has revealed precious little before he died. Miklos lent over the corpse. “Flying spells, always unpredictable.” he turned to Ludo. “You found his lair did you say? An essential visit I’d say. We must know more of what we are heading into. We must pursue this trail to foil the plans of the Sons of Night and their allies.”

“However we are wounded. I for one need a rest and to memorise my spells. let us bring his body into the clearing and I will determine what magical artefacts he had.”

Miklos sat crossed legged in front of the corpse and opened his spell book. Out of it he read Kelmars Wondrous Revealer . An incantation that allowed him to see magical auras….

The world dimmed slightly. Feldards axe was picked out in crackling blue. His spell book was etched in orange. He raised his glance to Jolenta and the corpse….

  7. Ludo

Ludo helped carry the dead wizard into the clearing, he was unsure what would happen to Jolenta, but he was certain that some clues to the Sons of Night would be found in the Golthars lair. Also he had to collect his bow from the watch. So he figured one more short visit to Threshold would need to take place before heading off into the wilderness.

  8. Stephan

“Thank you, Maruc,” Stephan said while inspecting the field dressings. He winced a little while standing.

“Da,” he said nodding. “Now that Yellow Robes is gone, we don’t need to flee. Let’s go find a warm fire and cool pint in town. Rat’s nest or not. But we’ll have to keep a low profile after that business at the boarded up inn.”

Searching the battle area, he retrieve what arrows he could.
