What’s In The Darkness?

Hefting the globe Maruc placed it gently on the floor just out side of the darkness field. “Ok, lets see if we can shed some light in there. Could I borrow your staff Miklos?”

“Here.” Miklos passed his staff over to the priest.

“Thanks.” Using the staff he rolled the globe into the field of darkness and peered into the gloom, hoping to see what it revealed. Unfortunately, like everything else they put into the dark void, it was enveloped by blackness.

While Miklos and Maruc had been working with the glowglobe, Nicolai gathered the others to try their rope trick. “Feldard, first I would suggest that we go either side until we reach the blockage, and then go over and down behind the otherside.” Feldard nodded impatiently towards Nicolai. “Fine lets just get on with it!” He grabbed up his end of the rope and began the task, walking along the other side once more until the rope came up to the obstacle.

As Feldard got one end of the rope, Nicolai gripped the other, and said, “Saeth, will you help me on this end?”

The three tried flipping the rope up and over the obstacle. On the third try, they seemed to have succeeded. They pulled as hard as they could, but whatever was in the middle of the curtained area was solidly anchored and would not budge.

“I think that’s another sacrificial altar. May Halav, Petra and Zirchev rain down all abominations on Denatita and his fellows! But I think we still need to see exactly what is there.”

  2. Maruc (Clr 3)

“I here you, Nicolai.” said Maruc with feeling as he tried to roll the ball into the darkness with the staff. “I also suspect that there might be a good reason why we cannot see what is in there. We might awaken something in there with light so be prepared.”

  3. Miklos (Mu 3)

Miklos waited near the stairwell just in case an expeditious retreat was called for. His eyes were fixed on the darkness and his stress was starting to show as beads of sweat ran down his collar.

“Come on then, lets see what Dentiata has been up to, I for one would like to get back the Specularum before I’m too old to walk.” he snapped.

  4. Feldard (Dwf 3)

The dwarf grumbled seemed walking in was gonna be the only solution. “I’ll go in. Tie me off in case their is a pit or such”

  5. Maruc (Clr 3)

“Lets see if the light globe illuminates the darkness first Feldard my friend.” Maruc suggested.

  6. “Thanks.” Using the staff he rolled the globe into the field of darkness and peered into the gloom, hoping to see what it revealed. Unfortunately, like everything else they put into the dark void, it was enveloped by blackness.

  7. Nicolai (T4)

“It might be worth searching through his scrolls and notes again before anyone goes in there. There may be a way listed to get rid of the darkness. Miklos, do you want some help with that whilst the others try to get the glow globe working?”

  8. Miklos (Mu3)

The disappointment that the glow-globe idea failed washed over Miklos. He sighed, it would take days, possibly weeks to scour the books in the library. “If you fished the globe back out it would still be alight I suspect. As to whether the answer to the darkness lies within the books you are almost certainly correct. However I think extracting the knowledge would take a prohibitive amount of time. I’d suggest we either follow Feldards plan and allow him the search the darkness with a rope around him. Or we leave here and find the dungeons and release what prisoner there are then continue our journey.”

  9. Maruc (Clr3)

“There is an alternative. I could try a Ward spell? This is a rite that will purify an area about a person. I will need to pray first though. Halav, in his wisdom, may allow me to perform this rite.”

Maruc offers a prayer to Halav to allow him to cast Protection from Evil about Feldard before he enters.
