Behind the Curtain

“Is there no chance that there was a map to this ruin, or some hint as to where we might find this Ylari?” Saeth paid little attention to the others as they searched the room. “Miklos, you say that this ‘eye’ was being searched for by both Dentiata and Sevastian. You don’t suppose Sevastian had found it already?”

Feldard grimaced at the sight of the darkness.

Miklos was gazing in wonder at the ‘rag’ bag he held. He had read about magics like this but the one in the Mage’s Guild was never allowed to be handled by the students. Here, now he had one in his hands. Even if the contents were filled with gold he doubted it would be worth the value of the bag. Well maybe.

“Mage, this is something you might want to deal with,” said the dwarf, interrupting his train of thought.

“Pardon?” he said absently and picking up the bag. He went over to the Dwarf and looked behind the curtain.

“Hmm… well its dark in there. Let us try fully drawing the curtain? Then we shall see the area from all angles. Its pointless reacting to half the evidence.”

Meanwhile, Maruc held back and ushered Ashira behind him ready to see what the others revealed, and Nicolai stopped his search for traps, joining the others as they peered behind the curtains. “Miklos, would this be a magically darkened area?”

To the young mage, the entire area behind the curtain appeared to be magical. As the curtains were opened further, all in the room felt a strong sense of evil and repulsion.

Feldard stepped back away warily, reaching inside his pack to pull out a coin and tossed it towards the darkness. Though he could not see it, he heard the coin bounce upon the floor.

“Well, at least passing into it doesn’t bring you elsewhere” He grimaces recalling Sevastian’s magic portals. “Mage, can you counter it or magically see through it?”

  2. Miklos (Mu3)

Miklos evaluated the darkness for a minute then turned to the dwarf.

“Hmm, permanent darkness is not uncommon. Although it is beyond my knowledge at the moment. If we discover Dentiata’s spellbook we may discover more and perhaps a way to counter this. If it is magical rather than a clerical phenomina it should be physically harmless.” Miklos paused. “Your coin indicated that.”

“If however it is clerical in nature it is somewhat outside my experience. Maruc, what do you think?”

  3. Maruc (Clr3)

“Evil that is so strong that non clergy can feel it is possibly some sort of aura of fear. I have heard that particulary devout priests of long standing can call on Halav to dispel auras such as this. I don’t know if Magi can do this but I suspect they can. But I agree with Miklos if there is anything magical in there that is phyiscally harmful or some sort of beast we would know by now.” Maruc grinned. “We could stretch a rope from one side of the aura to the other and see if anything solid is in there by pulling it across. A bit like a cheese wire?”

  4. Maruc (Clr3)

“Unfortunately I have no rope, and another thing, if there is a hole in the floor we will not discover it this way. But saying that we might have noticed a hole in the ceiling downstairs. Does anyone else have rope? I guess we’ll need it…” Maruc paced it out, “about fifty feet long. Oh and let go if you are suddenly being pulled in.”

I am assuming the tower is 60′ at the base and at this point is 50′ across.

  5. Nicolai (T4)

“Fortunately I do have some rope, if you care to use it. But would one of those glow globes reveal what was within the darkness?”

  6. Miklos (Mu 3)

“Good thinking Nicolai, and certainly worth a go.” Miklos relpied, “I’m not sure of the relationship between the silver activation plates and the globes themselves. Removal may disable the light. I’d suggest taking one or two from another room that has been already searched downstairs.”

  7. Nicolai (T4)

“Perhaps Ashira may have some information about the glow globes?”
