Prisoners of the Necromancer

“Looks like that’s the way forward. Same positions as before everyone? Or shall we have a bite to eat first? Or maybe even look to securing that laboratory to rest for the night?”

“Sounds like a plan, this is as good a place as any to have a rest. Secure. Anyway Maruc looks as if he’s going to fall over any minute.” Miklos checked around the area to ensure there were no more concealed entrances and so forth.

“Do I look that bad?” Maruc started to yawn. “Excuse me. I’m quite happy to carry on you know. Don’t stop on my account.”

Feldard scowled at the sight of yet another magical portal at the end of the hall. “Mage, what’s the likelihood of that thing taking us back to where the other door is? Or do you think it more likely that it leads deeper still?” The dwarf didn’t relish the idea of using the magical portal either way. Putting the whole thought of it aside, he moved to check the door on the left, listening at it while the others debated a meal and such. “Can we finish this level before talking of rest? There is still this one door left other than that cursed portal. Nicolai your tall… what’s inside?”

Beyond the small barred window was a room containing six small prison cells. Four of the cells contained corpses. The other two were empty.

Saeth peeked through the barred window on the first door, gesturing down the passage as she did so. “I’d guess that the door at the end would take us back upstairs… unless you’ve seen another portal on this floor somewhere?”

    Saeth: 10xp +10xp
    Maruc: 10xp +10xp
    Miklos: 10xp +10xp
    Nicolai: 10xp +10xp +10xp
    Feldard: 10xp +10xp

    TOTAL:
    Saeth: 3720/4000
    Maruc: 3660/6000
    Miklos: 3630/5000
    Nicolai: 3395/4800
    Feldard: 3530/4400

  2. Saeth Tegau

“Every castle has its prison, doesn’t it?” Saeth opened the door and moved into the room. You could learn a lot about someone by his enemies, and she hoped that this wizard was no different.

  3. So what are we doing? Carrying on or resting for the night in the laboratory (once we’ve secrured it)? Nicolai will vote for the latter, but will go with the majority vote.

  4. And he has his sword drawn, just in case.

  5. Feldard (Dwf 2)

Feldard entered the prison ward shortly after the Elf – not all that interested in yet more corpses but spurred into following in the likelihood that these too would animate.
“Given we don’t know where the next portal leads, I’m for allowing the cleric and mage to get a good.. well.. a nights rest. The rest of us can take turns keeping watch.”

  6. When Saeth tries to open the door, it is locked

  7. Feldard (Dwf 2)

Does it look like the key Feldard used on the portal will fit the door lock?

  8. Maruc (Clr 3)

“This must be a relatively new addition. Am I right in assuming that Sevastian didn’t build this castle. Rather he occupied it and converted it to his uses? If so and we are assuming these cells were original it would be safe to assume that there is a normal way of accessing them, say by stairs. How else could he start the tunnelings? He couldn’t have just teleported into solid rock and then got his ‘Undead servants’ to tunnel it out. He has to be an initial point of entry. Naturally it could have been back filled.”

“What I’m getting at here is I don’t think these are original. If you are a necromancer you’d only keep people alive for information or blackmail I’d imagine. These poor people probably had some value.”

Maruc gratefully accepts the offer of food and rest. After a brief meal he laid his shield and pack to one side and wrapped himself in his cloak and was swiftly off to sleep.

  9. Saeth Tegau

Despite the Priest’s eagerness to sleep, Saeth didn’t want to leave the job part undone. She turned to Nicholai and asked, “I seem to recall you had some skill with opening locked doors?”

  10. Miklos (Mu 2)

Miklos studied the new portal lock. Yes, much the same design but no clues as to where it lead.

“I’d say logically this would return us to the main castle building. But you never know. I’d agree with Maruc about the contruction of this area if Master Feldard could tell us if the age and style of the tunnelling matches that of the rest of the castle.”

Miklos was still investigating the portal after Maruc had departed when Seath mentioned her desire to proceed.

“You’d better go and get Maruc if you want to go in there. It would be a pointless risk otherwise. Whoever is in there is not going anywhere, its a prison. That and the fact that if the occupants could walk through walls I’d imagine we would be havng this conversation that and they wouldn’t be prisoners.

(and it be a very cruel DM to face us with ghosts wraiths wights and spectres!)

  11. Nicolai (T3)

Nicolai attempts to pick the lock.
