The Key

Nicolai peered through the keyhole, but could see nothing but darkness.

“We’re just looking remember that,” Feldard reminded Nicolai. The fact that the door had no knob made it a bit of a puzzle. The workmanship of the metal seemed sound. It would likely take more than their brawn to bust through it.

“A key?” Saeth answered the Dwarf, “Perhaps the blow it dealt addled me, but I seem to recall that great skeletal goblin had such a thing around its neck. You might want to search its corpse.”

“Ack! I thought someone had picked that up. I’ll go and get it.” Nicolai moved back to where they had fought they Bugbear Zombie and searched the corpse. He gingerly pulled the necklace with the key from around its neck.On his return he again checked the door for traps, but found none.

The key was quite unlike any other had ever seen. First, it was very large, which made sense given the size of the keyhole in the door. Second, there were no notches in the key, which were usually necessary in order to properly turn inside the lock.

Nicolai returned to the group, and asked the mage if he could discern anything magical about the door or it’s mechanism.

At Nicolai’s question he looked up. “What? Oh, a magical door you say? Quite possibly. Considering the keyholder was on the outside of the door suggests that the Master of the castle has left. Look here, Nicolai, there is an incantation here that will unbar even magically locked doors. See this part of the incantation reverses the flow of magic ions through a twist Nihibraal flux thus releasing the….oh I seem to have lost you. Quite fascinating though devilishly complicated stuff, I’m going to need alot of practice before I can employ much magic though.”

“But saying that I doubt if that door is magically held for two reasons. If someone with just a little more magical experience than myself can defeat the enchantment, its not worth the energy to seal the door. The second point being that we are facing a Necromancer and he has placed his trust in his craft noteably rasing the Bugbear to protect his belongings. Yes very apt. Magical enchantments, even ‘permanent’ ones, never last forever. Undead do, according to some of the texts I have read. No its not likely that the door is magically barred.”

Maruc and Miklos continued their studies and meditations. By mid-to-late afternoon they were finished.

  1. Note: I would have gone back and inserted Maruc’s previous post into the narrative, but it was easier leave things be rather than get everyone to adjust their posts and go back and find where the post fits in. I’ll try to pay more attention when I post to be sure I don’t miss any new comments.

    Death’s Door:
    Saeth: 10xp +5xp
    Maruc: 10xp +5xp +10xp
    Miklos: 10xp +5xp
    Nicolai: 10xp +10xp
    Feldard: 10xp +5xp

    TOTAL:
    Saeth: 3470/4000
    Maruc: 3425/6000
    Miklos: 3365/5000
    Nicolai: 3125/4800
    Feldard: 3265/4400

  2. Saeth Tegau

“Shall we be off, then?” The pain having largely receeded, Saeth was impatient to be off. “I remember somebody suggesting we’d like to be back to the city by nightfall.” She set off towards this magical door ‘with no knob’. “You still have the key, Miklos? You’ll need to be up here with me, too.”

I’m wincing sending her back into the fray… she’s indominable, but rather far from impervious, if this door is trapped or anything.

  3. “I want to at least be back at Sisak by nightfall, I’m not keen on the idea of hanging around here for the sake of it.

“Now I would suggest that either Maruc of Feldard open this door, with the other beside, weapon drawn. In addition Saeth with knives at the ready and myself with bow and arrow ready. Miklos, stand behind us with what ever spells you have selected at the ready.

    “Does this seem agreeable?”

  4. Maruc (Clr 3)

Maruc will require at least another hour to meditate (assuming clearing the spiders and the searches and whatnot took and hour. Then we will be ready to go.

  5. Miklos

Miklos will also need this time to finish his meditation for magic missile. After that he is willing to carry on. If people prefer to wait until the following morning before continuing thats fine.

  6. Note the last line in the post. They are done meditating/studying.

  7. Feldard (Dwf 2)

Nicolai’s plan puts him up at the front. “That’s a sound plan to me. We only have a few short hours before nightfall so we best get moving.”
Feldard retrieves the key from whom ever had it last and moves to catch up with the Elf.
Once everyone is in place he’ll insert the key into the door and give it a twist and pushes on the door with his shoulder – his hands moving to prepare his battle axe.

  8. Miklos

if all else fails – read the instructions, or the DM’s post in this case!
