Seeing the approach of the men and already struggling against the pressure of the spell Miklos could wait no longer. They were about to be discovered so he stepped sideways centrally on the staircase ensuring he did not block the passage of Seath or Feldard he cast the spell with an explosive release of exertion.
As they reached the archway, half of the robed men fell into instanteous sleep, leaving five startled society brethren.
Seizing the moment Maruc hissed urgently, “We must stop them raising the alarm!” Then stiding forward he called as he swung his flail in large lazy arcs. “Halav’s justice upon thee!” He met the first of the surprised ‘veiled that were still standing after Miklos’s spell.
Well, perhaps Halav would prevent his battlecry from raising that much-feared alarm, thought Saeth, but she imagined that silence would’ve done a better job of it.
Be that as it may, the battle was joined. In the close confines of the staircase, it would be difficult to fit a third armsman abreast of the dwarf and the priest, so Saeth held her position as a rearguard, throwing her daggers past the dimunitive Feldard and into his assailant. The man fell dead by her dagger before he could even draw his weapon.
Feldard was glad the wait for battle was over! He charged in, not bellowing as he would have liked for Maruc was correct – he didn’t wish to raise the alarm and bring back the other half of the Veiled members. He hacked at those standing with his battle axe not concerned with leaving any alive to question.. that’s what the sleeping ones were for!
Nicolai took advantage of the darkness and confusion by creeping round the back of the remaining men. He attack from the rear stabbing one of the surprised men deep into his back, killing him.
Everything happened so quickly. Already their number was down to two, and they were only then just drawing their daggers. The dwarf was on top of one of them. He desperately plunged his dagger through a gap in the dwarf’s armor even as the dwarven battle axe arced through the air toward his head. Unfortunately for him, the dwarf’s battle wound did not affect the axe’s trajectory and it was end of the veiled criminal.
Seizing the opportunity, the swordswoman darted through a gap between her two allies, taking up station in the rear of the Veils.
The lone hood fled back toward the stairs shouting to his companions for help. “We are under attack! They have penetrated the…”
Those words would be his last as Saeth’s sword silenced him forever. Everyone paused in silence listening. One of the hooded men emerged from the exit. He called to the others to join him!
