The Strength of Bone

“Aha! I think you may have stumbled across something Maruc.” said Nicolai with uncharacteristic zeal as he shone the lightstone into the recesses of the coffin. “Lets see what we have found.”

The priest lent his weight into lifting of the rest of the lid and gazed into the coffin. “Hasan, Saeth come here. We need your council.” he called. He turned back to Nicolai “Not a female elf? What with the armour and weapons.” Marucs thoughts turned to Saeth. “Well I may be mistaken. It could be one of the Sisters, a warrior Sister. I am not versed in elven skeletology normally in humans the hips would be wider….”

“Forget it Maruc.” Nicolai snapped noticing the others drawing near. “Miklos, a scroll for you to drool over.” he reached in the coffin to retrieve it.

“Wait, wait, wait!” Miklos muttered as he closed in on the coffin, “Have you not heard that much can be learnt from the position of a corpse and which hand clasps which object? It may be of significance!”

“No.” said Nicolai handing him the scroll.

Mikos sighed, “Lets see what it says” he said gently unfurling the scroll and reading it.

“A second chance is seldom found,
to revenge those beneath the ground.
On ye this fate I do intone,
that you may feel the strength of bone”

As the last syllable of the short poem fell off the mage’s lips, the skeleton lurched forth with blinding speed, ramming the sword into the mage!

  • Feldard (Dwf 4)

The dwarf, who was still over by the doorway, upon seeing the skeleton impale the mage, charged full bore the length of the room. “Maruc see to the mage! I’ll cover you.” Feldard’s axe, swung up over his shoulder, as he ran; muscles ready to let loose with a furious attack upon the skeleton.

  • Hasan arrived in the room to see the skeletal remains rise up to impale his companion. Against such a foe, his ceremonial blade would again be little use, he was sure. As quickly as he could, he invoked the magical missle incantation he was taught years ago by Elrond and directed the bolt toward their unearthly enemy.

  • Miklos (Mu 3)

Miklos cried out in shock and pain his hand cluching at the deep wound as blood bubbled through his fingers. He backed off a couple of steps dazed wondering for a moment what had hit him. He felt dizzy as blood drained from his head until the adrenalin galvanised him into an automatic flight.

  • Maruc (Clr 4)

Maruc cursed. There was no way he could catch the fleeing mage in all this armour. Still, like Feldard said he could at least put himself between it and Miklos. It still had to climb out of the coffin. He ran between them one hand fishing out his symbol the other swinging his slung shield up into position. “Back to your darkness! You face a servant of Halav incarnate!” he cried.

  • The rogue jumped back in surprise. More through fear than thought, his shortsword sprung into his hand and plunged straight into the back of the creature. It didn’t occur to him that it might be ineffective…
