Dice Rolling

I’m looking into letting the players do some of the dice rolling if they so choose and as long as it doesn’t slow down the game. Irony Games has a dice roller server that sends dice rolls via email. Check it out: http://www.irony.com/mailroll.html – what do you think? Is there a better dice server out there?

Irony has about the best dice roller, though I don’t know that it would be terrible to just let people roll their own dice at home. Personally I’m fine with you rolling the dice, but however we want to work things is fine. I’m just anxious to get started.

  • I’m happy with the DM dealing with the die rolls – this is faster and less ‘rules exposed’ and more story driven.

    I’d much prefer to read:
The Kobold’s rage is up and under the pressure of clashing swords and the screams of the wounded, yet again Maruc fails to deliver the combat prowess admirably demonstrated by the sturdy Dwarf next to him…etc.

    than:
Maruc rolls a 9. He misses the Kobold (again)
Feldard rolls a 17 and causes 6 damage. Exit 1 Kolbold stage left.
The Kobold rolls 19 and causes 5 damage to Maruc.
Fresh cleric please this one’s used…

  • I like it, because we can keep many (rules mechanics) numbers out of our posts, and it still lets us see the results as we go (which will speed the game up and put more of the writing work on us).

On the other hand, it could be a lot of (electronic) paperwork for you–perhaps two to three emails per player post in combat, and I wouldn’t be too offended if you found it easier to do all the rolling yourself. Mostly, I emphatically echo Feldard’s last sentance.

  • I’m all for keeping dice rolls out of our hands for the moment. Given my schedule atm I can post here a most days, but to do full combat etc would take more than that, and I can’t access this site from work (not that I really have the time there anyway).

I would definitely feel happier with as much of the mechanics hidden away as possible. I feel this would also make it more enjoyable for non players to dip in and out as they want to and read up on what is happening.
